We just kicked off the Student Research Forum—a new project by IEEE Young Professionals. The idea is simple: show students that IEEE isn’t just a big name, and give those who are already doing research a place to talk about it. It’s about more than just the technical stuff; it’s about learning how to explain a “hard-to-grasp” topic without losing the audience.
First stop, aka Testing Grounds: Faculty of Electrical Engineering On March 10th, we met for the first of four sessions planned for this year on the topic of “Sustainable Development of the Electric Power Industry”. The Chair of the Czechoslovakia Section Young Professionals, Ing. Jaroslav Hornak, Ph.D., started things off by explaining how to actually get involved in IEEE and what’s in it for students when they join, not only IEEE itself, but actual research projects at their respective institution.
Not just for the “insiders” The presentations weren’t just for the students already in the lab. A big part of the event was showing new students what’s actually happening behind the scenes and how they can get involved in research themselves.
We had a group from the Department of Materials and Technology sharing their work on everything from:
- Insulating materials and autonomous systems.
- Renewable energy and the (actually quite interesting) recycling of oils and resins.
Beer and ideas at Slavia Once the official part was over, we moved to the nearby Slavia restaurant. Over a diner, we talked about how the event went and what we want to do next. Honestly, the best ideas—and the best way to get new people on board—usually happen during these informal networking co-events.
